Girls’ Day for the fourth time

2015. May 5.

The so-called Girls’ Day events took place in late April when companies, university laboratories and research institutes opened their gates to girls only.

The main goal of the series of countrywide events was to foster awareness among secondary school student girls about careers in science, technology and information technology. The event was organized by the Women in Science Association, founded in 2008 with the aim of creating equal opportunities for women in the field of research and development and innovation. There is evidence both in Hungary and on around Europe that there are too few new careers in research and engineering for female candidates whose number – students, researchers and engineers – is very low.
This year’s event was supported by dozens of institutions, including multinational companies such as IBM, Ericsson and Microsoft. Prezi, the world famous Hungarian start-up, also invited girls, where after an interactive company tour the participants listened to presentations given by experts. The Milestone Institute talked about the educational systems abroad, the entrance processes of universities, scholarships and trainings. The Lego factory in Nyíregyháza (Eastern Hungary) also arranged visits and events including Lego construction. In Győr (Western Hungary) Audi opened its doors to girls, and female employees shared their experiences with the visitors.
Participation was free of charge, and this year more than 1500 girls took part in the different events.
